SC Governors Mansion Native Plant Overlays

Audubon SC engaged Surculus as the Landscape Architect for the renovation of public gardens on the SC Governor’s Mansion property to increase bird-supportive habitat and food sources for local and migratory bird species. Renovations included three separate phases of an all-native planting design in highly visible and publicly-accessed areas of the Mansion grounds and the installation of bird houses throughout the property intended to host a variety of avian species. Design challenges included developing strategies for blending native plants into a historic formal garden; yet, through a simple palette of native plantings, habitat and / or food sources were provided for a diverse array of target species. The gardens and designs were sponsored by Audubon and the first phase was unveiled in conjunction with Governor Henry McMaster’s endorsement of an officially recognized annual Native Plant Week in South Carolina.
