Bridge Pointe Ecological Park

Our team was hired by the City of Charleston to develop a nature-based stormwater management plan for several properties within the Church Creek basin, a frequently flooded watershed located west of the Ashley River. The Church Creek area experiences significant stormwater flooding  due to a complex history of phosphate mining, wetland fill, creek channelization, and extensive suburban development. It was a focus area of the Dutch Dialogues (TM) Charleston, and the particular site featured in this portfolio is the location of a federally assisted buyout of repetitive loss townhomes; therefore, the City was subject to extensive site restrictions as it was repurposed into an ecological stormwater park. While the site design is primarily focused on maximizing stormwater storage capacity, Surculus provided recommendations on the initial layout and grading to create a functional public asset for the adjacent community. Additionally, Surculus designed all park features and developed an all-native planting plan for the site.
